China still don't respect anything from abroad, it has to change if it doesn't want to loose foreign markets, in Europe more and more people boycott Chinese products and the trend won't stop. Now that it has stolen almost all occidental technologies and know-how it should really be less protective and rely on its talents instead of its unfair rules.
Now, even if I'm very upset by Chinese practices, I'm really looking forward the Chinese movies of the future years to come, it should be a fresh air from stereotyped and serialized Hollywood blockbusters, China is the only country that will be able to have big budgets on par with Hollywood ones (French cinema, the second in the world far after the US one, never was able to match US budgets, they make movies on average 1/20th of a Hollywood movie budget and no higher than 100m$ once in a while), if not more expensive.
But for now, I'm still looking for a great Chinese movie, in France we don't get any if they exist except Yang Zimou's and Yip Man trilogy. The only Asian movies we got where Bruce Lee's back in the 70's... It seems to be a long road before Chinese movies be as successful as Hollywood ones but maybe it could happen overnight !

I'm don't understand your comment on Cannes : it is considered the most important film festival in the world. Does that means it is the most hyped with a lot of stars but in fact not that good (anymore) for business ?

Max,

Thanks for your question. I certainly didn't mean to suggest that the Chinese system is geared toward the U.S. studio system, as that is not at all the case. Writers and directors who spend the time to develop relationships can do quite well. The salaries are nowhere near what they are in the U.S., but work opportunities are plentiful.

Hi Robert,
Great article with very useful information. How do Indie writers/directors fare in China? Are there any opportunities or is it, as your blog suggests, more geared toward the US studio system?
Thanks,
Max.

Hi Rob -

Thanks for making it so easy to catch up on the weekly Chinese box office. I always look forward to checking in with your website. Great thoughts in the article "The Increasingly Astonishing Rise of China's Film Business". You may want to do a related analysis (if you havent covered it already) on the lack of ancillary revenues from home video, VOD and Pay TV windows, as opposed to the US model of the theatrical release driving the train. Once these distribution channels gain traction, China will be wildly in the forefront of the world's film business.
